TGE Meeting #7 - 3.8.07

TGE Entrance and Exit Requirements

Are we spreading ourselves too thin by not having 11th and 12th Graders taking same schedules? (e.g. Pre-Calc)
Are we saying that 9-11 is truly distinct from 12th?

Pros -
Deals with over-crowding
Encourages leadership
Mixed classes are problematic
Senioritis spreads

Cons -
Does this allow for breadth of college prep

Exit Requirements:
Autobiography? (Met - 100 pages)
Length and Time spent a long project
Learning Objectives across the curriculum
The Met's learning goals
Seminar Projects
If 1 seminar all year, then one major senior project
If 2 seminars, they do one "seminar project" and one "senior project"
Academic Passion Project - with major research component
Need clear, skill-based standards for project
Does this need to be rooted in a class? Can advisory support it?
Personal Challenge / Memoir project in advisory?
Students write about a challenge throughout their life - then do something which they also write about
Portfolio as exit requirement?

Moving forward: Portfolio Sub-Committees
Steve/Kari: Academic Passion Project in Seminar
Chris: Memoir / Personal Challenge / Action Piece in Advisory
Amy: Resume/ Cover Letter in College Prep
Sarah: Engagement in world at large in Civics
Kari: Culminating Economics Experience (Budget for college? and life after 5 year budget -- inflation, interest, loans, CREDIT CARD INTEREST RATES etc)

Before we move forward - we need to decide if the Learning Goals are integral - if they are they have to be everywhere

Schedule Template

As Kari noted elsewhere on the blog: "[Here] on this blog are four templates that are possibilities for the 12th grade experience. They offer choices of one or two seminars. Only the last template changes timing from this year."

Meeting 4

The Big Decision was made to use a hybrid model where all 12th graders take a four course core (probably made up of a English/Civics class, a Math/Econ class, College Prep, and Gym), taking up about half their time, and then spending the rest of the time doing something in-depth, which for now is called the "Seminar." The core will feature courses that are distinct from Trimester to Trimester to allow for students who might enter 12th Grade mid-year.

We left needing to come back to the following big questions:

  • Need to look at staffing!!!!!!!
  • Performance requirements for graduation, i.e. what do kids have to do to graduate?
  • How does senior advisory/staffing work?
  • Dealing with Regents?
  • Entry requirements?
  • How do we structure long trips?
  • What should the “seminar” look like?
Our next meeting will be Friday, January 12 at 7:45 AM to re-evaluate once staffing issues have been investigated, and to begin discussing the "Seminar".
